Density Costs Time, Not Horsepower
A grinder does not stall in hardwood. It simply takes a thinner bite. Air-dried white oak runs near 47 pounds per cubic foot against roughly 25 for eastern white pine, and hardness tracks the same way. Shagbark hickory sits around 1,880 on the Janka scale, white oak near 1,350, black walnut about 1,010. Osage orange, which turns up in this county's old hedgerows, is north of 2,600.
At the wheel that shows up as feed rate. On soft wood the operator swings steadily and takes a full pass. On hickory the same swing loads the engine, so the pass gets shallower and the pass count doubles. A 30-inch pine and a 30-inch hickory are not the same job by a wide margin, and a quote that prices them identically is either padding the pine or losing money on the hickory.
Carbide also gives up its edge faster in dense wood. A dull tooth polishes rather than cuts, which adds heat, adds time, and eventually forces a tooth change in the middle of the job.
Old Fence Lines Are Where Teeth Die
Sumner County was farm ground long before it was subdivisions, and the hedgerows that divided those fields did not all get bulldozed. Osage orange and black locust planted as living fence a century ago are still standing on lot lines across the newer parts of Gallatin, and they are the hardest wood most homeowners here will ever pay to remove.
The wood alone would be enough. The real hazard is what grew into it. Fence staples, smooth wire and barbed wire get engulfed by decades of trunk growth and end up buried three or four inches inside sound heartwood, where no surface sweep with a detector is going to find them. Those grind deceptively. The punky center comes away in a minute or two, and then the wheel meets a rim of sound sapwood two to six inches thick that is as dense as anything living. People watching the first minute expect a twenty-minute job and get a ninety-minute one.
The worse surprise is underneath. On shallow-soil ground the root flare grows around and over rock, and by the time a tree is eighty years old it has locked chunks of the limestone shelf inside its own root wood. You cannot see them and a probe usually slides past them. We quote those stumps with a stated target depth and a written note that rock may stop us short of it, because telling you in advance is better than explaining it on the invoice.
What the Extra Time Costs

Common Questions
Why is my oak quoted higher than my neighbor's maple of the same width?
Because the wheel moves through them at different speeds. Oak takes a shallower bite per pass and dulls teeth faster, so the same 28 inches of diameter is more passes, more time and more tooth wear. Diameter sets the size of the job, species sets how long that size takes to finish.
What happens if you hit buried wire in a hedgerow tree?

How do I measure the flare for a quote?
Put the tape across the widest point where the trunk meets the ground, not up on the stub where it has already tapered. Take the measurement twice at right angles if the base is oval, which oak and hickory usually are, and give us the larger number. That is the number the machine has to travel across.
The hardwood stump is rotten. Does that make it cheaper?
Not as often as you would hope. Rot usually starts in the heart and works out, so a hollow stump still has a hard outer shell of sapwood, plus a root flare that is often perfectly sound. What rot does reliably change is safety, because a hollow base can collapse under the machine, so we probe before we commit weight to it.
