Why We Only Do Stumps

There is no shortage of outfits in Sumner County that will take a tree down, and a good many of them will tell you honestly that the stump is somebody else's problem. Usually it is. Even Gallatin's own electric utility puts in writing that its line-clearance crews cut and chip their own brush and stop there. Somebody has to be the one who turns up afterward with a grinder and nothing else on the trailer.

Doing one thing means the machine on the trailer is the right machine for what is in front of it, and the price is not carrying a crew that also climbs, prunes, hauls and mulches. It also means we say no with some regularity. If the tree is still standing, we are not your first call. If the stump turns out to sit on Corps of Engineers ground rather than yours, you hear that before we quote it, not after we have taken your deposit.

A City That Rebuilt Itself in Twenty-Five Years

Gallatin counted 23,230 people in 2000. The 2020 census put it at 44,431 and the 2024 estimate is 52,489, which works out near a hundred and eighty new residents a month, and one month in 2020 alone cleared thirty million dollars in residential building permits. Almost none of the housing that growth produced has a mature tree anywhere on the lot.

That splits our work straight down the middle. Half is 1950s and 1960s streets off Hartsville Pike, where silver maples planted as cheap fast shade seventy years ago are finally failing at three and four feet across, with root plates running under a narrow concrete drive and a clay sewer lateral of the same vintage. The other half is warranty grinding on three-inch caliper maples and cherries a builder set into compacted pad fill eighteen months ago that never took.

Those are not the same job. They need different equipment, different depth and a different conversation, and mixing them up is how a homeowner ends up with a quote that doubles once the truck is in the driveway.

New Company, Ground We Already Know

This business is new and we are not going to dress that up. What is not new is the ground. Working here means knowing before you arrive that a lot up off Long Hollow Pike is likely to stop the wheel on limestone shelf at eight or ten inches, while a lot down in Cages Bend will not stop it on anything, and pricing both of those honestly instead of averaging them.

What a new outfit can offer is availability and a straight number. There is no six-week backlog to work through, so a routine grind goes on the calendar three to five working days out and a leaning trunk or a storm stump gets same or next day. Send photographs and you get a fixed price the same day, usually within a couple of hours on a weekday, rather than a range that firms up once we are standing in your yard.

What We Will Not Do

We do not clear lots and we do not take brush contracts. We do not quote a stump we have not seen a photograph of, because a quote given blind over the phone is a number designed to be renegotiated later. And we do not leave an open hole and call the job finished: the grindings go back in tamped in layers, the surplus is either raked where you want it or hauled, and which of those it is was settled before we started.

We also will not touch anything in a city right-of-way or inside a historic overlay on a homeowner's word alone. Around the Public Square that distinction is not academic. The blocks between Town Creek and North Water Avenue sit inside a listed historic district, and a stump six feet the wrong side of your line belongs to the city.
