Fifty-Year-Old Shade Trees on Fifty-Year-Old Lots
Hendersonville incorporated in 1969 with roughly 250 residents on the books and now counts better than 61,000, which makes it the largest city in Sumner County and, in yard terms, older than most of Gallatin. The subdivisions that filled the ground between Old Hickory Lake and Gallatin Road through the 1970s went in with silver maple and water oak, because both grow fast and cost a developer close to nothing.
Half a century on, those two species are most of what we grind here. A silver maple set out in 1975 is commonly three feet through at the flare, and its roots run flat and shallow under the driveway apron instead of down. That plate is why a Hendersonville grind takes longer than the trunk diameter suggests: the stump itself is twenty minutes and the runners are another forty.
Water oak is the other regular. It seldom holds up past sixty or seventy years in this soil, hollows from the center outward, and starts shedding limbs well before anybody calls a tree service about it.
The December 2023 Tornado Started Here
The EF-2 that crossed Sumner County on the evening of December 9, 2023 first touched down at 130 mph in Hendersonville, then ran through Gallatin and finally quit thirty-four miles later out toward Trousdale County. We are still taking calls about what it left, and those are not ordinary stumps.
